Otoplasty and Ear Pinning
An incision is normally made behind the ear, some skin is removed, and the cartilage (the gristly hard part under the ear skin) is pinned down with stitches to allow it to bend backwards towards the head.
An extensive consultation will be given along with a full examination with a Consultant Surgeon to determine what will be the best effect to complement the other features of your face.
Certain factors determine the Surgeons technique for this procedure and generally incisions are hidden.
Having protruding ears may cause you to feel self-conscious about the way you look. When you visit Transpire, we can discuss whether ear pinning is right for you. Our Consultant Surgeons have a lot of experience in this area and we use the most effective up to date techniques so you will see excellent results.
What to Expect from Otoplasty
Ear surgery (otoplasty / ear pinning) is normally carried out to correct either the shape, the size or when the ears are protruding because more attention seems to be drawn to the ears. Do you have concerns about your ears being too prominent from from side of your head?
You can have otoplasty at most ages. People have otoplasty treatment between the age of 5 and 6 years old because around 90% of ear growth is completed by that time. However at Transpire the minimum age to be considered for otoplasty treatment is 18 years old.
Straight after surgery, the patient’s head is usually wrapped with special padded fluff bandages, which helps with healing. Downtime is usually minimal so after just a few days, the patient’s fluff bandages are replaced with a lighter bandage for a further couple of days.
What Causes Someone to Have Prominent Ears?
Perhaps having ears that stick out runs in your family, but it’s occurrence is usually more random than not. Technically speaking, the outer ear is at an angle of around 20 to 30 degrees to the head’s side, and having prominent ears shouldn’t affect your hearing. If the angle is more than 30 degrees the ears will have an appearance of protruding.
Injury can affect the shape of the ears and cartilage growth can be affected by genetics factors as well as having various health conditions.

To determine whether having your ears pinned back is right for you, the first stage will mean coming to see us for a consultation where a Transpire surgeon will be able to evaluate you The goal of otoplasty will be to ensure that you will no longer be distracted by or feel uncomfortable by protruding ears. People of all ages have otoplasty.
